More than a third of global aid is multilateral. For Sweden the share is even bigger and increasing. Multilateral organizations comprise UN development organizations, multilateral development banks, the European Commission and global programs and partnerships. Such multitude obviously implies wide variations in tasks and in the way organizations function. Some organizations are at times heavily criticized, while others are deemed to be focused and efficient. As aid through multilaterals increase, their effectiveness becomes increasingly important. What general lessons can be learned? How is the effectiveness of multilateral organizations currently evaluated and assessed? How can we know which ones are more fit for purpose? And what are the implications for Sweden and other donors?
