A wave of autocratization is sweeping the world, the rule of law is in retreat and unconstitutional takeovers are on the rise. Respect for state constitutions is low and the foundations of social contracts are shaky.
This situation calls for reflection on forms of international support to national constitution-building processes. Drawing on thirty years of experience, the EBA report External Support to Constitution Building Processes discusses how such support can be effective, how it can be combined with peacebuilding support, and when it is simply better not to intervene.
