Employment in Africa – How has Sida Contributed?

12 march, 14:00-15:30, Lilla studion, Kulturhuset, Stockholm

Sub-Saharan Africa has the world’s youngest and fastest-growing workforce. The need for more jobs and increased earning is urgent at the same time as the labour market is facing major structural challenges – a large informal sector, massive underemployment, and low earnings. Productive employment is a central pathway out of poverty and has long been an important area for Sida – but how successful have the efforts been?

Welcome to the launch of the EBA report Employment and Earnings in Sub-Saharan Africa: Sida’s Contribution. During the seminar, the authors will present the report’s findings, and we will discuss the extent to which and how Sida has contributed to new employment and earnings increases in the region. The discussion will highlight which types of interventions have been effective, the limitations of current approaches and of results monitoring, and lessons learnt for future support.

Participants:

  • Shanta Devarajan, Professor, Georgetown University
  • Elisabet Montgomery, Lead Policy Specialist Job Creation and Trade, Sida
  • Annika Sundén, Associate Professor in economics
  • Louise Fox, Report author and development economist, The Brookings Institution and ODI Global
  • Derrick Abudu, Report author and Senior Researcher, ODI Global

Moderator: Torgny Holmgren

The seminar will be held in english.
