Sweden has a long tradition of providing development cooperation with the aim of strengthening democracy and respect for human rights. Sida-support for these purposes has increased in recent years, and accounts for more than 5 billion SEK annually. At the same time, there have been a number of changes that affect the conditions for this kind of support.
This study analyses the new challenges and opportunities for civil society support and the implications for donors like Sweden. An overview of the way that civil society is changing is presented.
